Threat Overview
Cisco published a coordinated NX-OS security-hardening advisory on 7 October 2026 covering six grouped vulnerability classes, including CVE-2026-76455 (improper access control, CVSS 9.8) and CVE-2026-76459 (out-of-bounds write, CVSS 9.8). Cisco states these were found during internal security testing and are not known to be exploited. The CVE groupings aggregate multiple underlying defects by CWE, so there is no verified single request path, command, IOC, or exploit signature suitable for a CVE-specific Sentinel hunt. The primary response is precise asset/build validation and upgrade. The accompanying hunts focus on management access anomalies, unexpected configuration changes, perimeter probes, and instability in ingested NX-OS device logs; they cannot establish whether a particular CVE was exercised.

Impacted Systems
**Vendor/products:** Cisco MDS 9000, Nexus 3000, Nexus 7000, Nexus 9000 (standalone NX-OS or ACI mode), UCS 6300/6400/6500/6600 fabric interconnects, and UCS X-Series 9108 100G FI running vulnerable NX-OS/UCS software. **Deployment:** customer-managed datacenter switches/fabric infrastructure; configuration-independent per Cisco. **Fixed NX-OS builds:** MDS 9.4(5a); Nexus 3000/9000 standalone 10.3(10), 10.4(8), 10.5(6), 10.6(4); Nexus 7000 8.4(14); Nexus 9000 ACI 16.0(9h), 16.1(6g), 16.2(3g). **UCS:** Cisco lists mode-specific UCS 4.3/6.0 fixes in its advisory; consult the per-mode matrix rather than assuming an NX-OS build applies. **Exposure:** reachable management/control-plane interfaces increase operational risk, but Cisco says vulnerable configurations are not limited to Internet-facing systems. **Not affected:** other Cisco products not named in the advisory are not known to be vulnerable to this cluster.
Why this matters
Network and fabric infrastructure can be business-critical; the 9.8-rated access-control and memory-corruption classes warrant prompt remediation even without exploitation reports. Behavioral hunts can identify adjacent anomalous management activity but not fingerprint the grouped vulnerabilities.
Exploitation Status
**Vendor-confirmed vulnerabilities and patches:** Cisco PSIRT advisory published 7 October 2026. **Vendor-confirmed exploitation status:** Cisco reports no known public malicious use or exploitation and no workarounds. **Researcher assessment:** absent disclosed attack primitives or validated IOCs, broad management/health anomalies are contextual signals only and cannot confirm or rule out exploitation.
What this hunt looks for
Only Syslog and CommonSecurityLog records ingested into Microsoft Sentinel for the relevant Cisco NX-OS management assets. Device identity/IP scoping is required before interpreting generic management port activity. No appliance configuration inspection or firmware verification was performed.
Required logs
CommonSecurityLog network telemetry; constrain DestinationIP to known NX-OS management IPs; CommonSecurityLog with 30-day network history; scope destinations to NX-OS; Syslog from NX-OS devices with audit/configuration messages; Syslog from NX-OS switches; these are generic health signals, not CVE fingerprints; Syslog from confirmed NX-OS management devices; filter Computer to asset inventory
Hunt 1: First pass — NX-OS administrative login anomalies in Syslog
Required telemetry: Syslog from confirmed NX-OS management devices; filter Computer to asset inventory
Syslog
| where TimeGenerated >= ago(14d)
| where SyslogMessage has_any ("login","authentication","authorization","AAA","SSH")
| where SyslogMessage has_any ("failed","failure","invalid","success","accepted","denied")
| summarize Events=count(), Examples=make_set(SyslogMessage,6) by Computer, bin(TimeGenerated,1h)
| where Events >= 10
| order by Events desc
Hunt 2: NX-OS privileged configuration or role-change messages
Required telemetry: Syslog from NX-OS devices with audit/configuration messages
Syslog
| where TimeGenerated >= ago(30d)
| where SyslogMessage has_any ("configuration","configure","role","privilege","username","account","SNMP")
| where SyslogMessage has_any ("changed","modified","created","removed","added","deleted","enabled","disabled")
| project TimeGenerated, Computer, ProcessName, SeverityLevel, SyslogMessage
| order by TimeGenerated desc
Hunt 3: Perimeter traffic to switch-management services
Required telemetry: CommonSecurityLog network telemetry; constrain DestinationIP to known NX-OS management IPs
CommonSecurityLog
| where TimeGenerated >= ago(7d)
| where DestinationPort in (22,443,161,830)
| summarize Connections=count(), SourceCount=dcount(SourceIP), SourceSamples=make_set(SourceIP,10), Ports=make_set(DestinationPort,8) by DestinationIP, bin(TimeGenerated,1h)
| where Connections >= 25 or SourceCount >= 5
| order by Connections desc
Hunt 4: New management sources contacting network devices
Required telemetry: CommonSecurityLog with 30-day network history; scope destinations to NX-OS
let Baseline=CommonSecurityLog
| where TimeGenerated between (ago(30d)..ago(2d))
| where DestinationPort in (22,443,161,830)

| join kind=leftanti Baseline on SourceIP, DestinationIP
| project TimeGenerated, SourceIP, DestinationIP, DestinationPort, DeviceAction, DeviceVendor, DeviceProduct
| order by TimeGenerated desc
Hunt 5: NX-OS process crash, reload, and instability indicators
Required telemetry: Syslog from NX-OS switches; these are generic health signals, not CVE fingerprints

| where SyslogMessage has_any ("crash","core","segmentation","panic","reload","restart","exception","watchdog")

Detection Notes
**Highest signal:** unexplained privileged configuration changes on a confirmed NX-OS device and unusual new management sources tied to unauthorized access. **Noise:** normal network maintenance, monitoring platforms, SNMP polling, switch reboots, and generic syslog error strings. **Critical gaps:** Cisco NX-OS may log to dedicated parsers or non-Sentinel collectors; the advisory does not disclose exploit-specific requests, so KQL cannot reliably identify exploitation. Firewall flows without an NX-OS IP allowlist are not product-specific. This is a patch-led review, not a claim of active exploitation.
